TL 6222 GREAT DUNMOW PARSONAGE DOWNS (S SIDE) 7/3 No. 3 Portways GV II

House, C15 or earlier and C17. Timber framed and plastered with gabled peg tile roofs. Of 'T' shaped plan form with a low single storey and attics 'hall' block and 2 storey crosswing at the W end. The hall block has a gabled dormer in the front roof slope. 2 small stacks in this front roof slope and large late C17 stack against flank wall to the rear of the crosswing. Windows are C19 casements with small panes and off-centre door has original arched head exposed. Old red brick exposed on front as plinth walls and crosswing is jettied to the front and has C19 bargeboards. The interior reveals an open hall and cross passage of the C15 or earlier with remains of soot blackened crownpost roof, and service door. A crosswing appears to have existed at the high E end and its flank wall remains. The crosswing is an addition of the late C16/early C17 and is of 3 bays. A floor with elaborately moulded joists was inserted c.1500 with a contemporary brick stack in the hearth bay, which has a moulded mantel beam and chamfered brick mullions over. The floor 'clamps' are also moulded with a simple crenellated top. (RCHM 35).
