Packhorse Bridge,
Washgate
II
Packhorse bridge. Early C18. Rubble and coursed rubble limestone with gritstone
dressings. Shallow segmental arch, the lining of which is carefully coursed, with
shallow parapet walls, surmounted by gritstone copings, linked by iron cramps.
Metalled surface to routeway from the north extends onto bridge. The bridge is a
crossing point on the River Dove for an ancient packhorse route from Longnor into
the Goyt Valley. A rare example of a perfectly preserved packhorse bridge.
