Details
TL 6221 GREAT DUNMOW STORTFORD ROAD (S SIDE) 8/17 Kingdom Hall (formerly listed as 20.2.6? No 15) GV II
House, now flats. Late C17. 2 storey, timber framed and plastered, gabled peg tile roofs. Basically 'L' shaped with the addition of a bulky gabled stair tower on the rear. Front is jettied, with 2 original console braces, a wide C20 square projecting bay window with small panes and 2 C20 oriel casement windows on the first floor. The front roof slope has a wide C20 flat roofed dormer. The interior reveals a complex series of builds, starting with the front range, which has a wide central bay sandwiched between 2 narrow bays. The stage was jettied at both front and rear with a joggled side purlin roof. Contemporary with this is the large stair tower which has an octagonal newel post, an original blocked 2 light window with ovolo-modified glazed window, straight cut joists and recessed assembly at the eaves. The leg of the 'L' is an apparently later, partly English bond brick wing of probably the late C17 with original stack on its flank. This has an original ground floor door opening with chamfered head and jambs and chamfered spine beams. RCHM 21.
