Small country house, formerly a school, now hotel.
C17 and mid C18 with late C18, early C19 alterations and c.1900 addition, possibly by Bodley. Part red brick and part coursed squared sandstone, with stone dressings. C17 wing is of stone and has a deep chamfered plinth, continuous dripmould to ground floor and a steeply pitched red clay tile roof with brick gable stack to east. The north east C18 wing is of brick with chamfered stone plinth, plain first and second floor brick bands, sawtooth eaves band and hipped red clay tile roof with three large brick ridge stacks. The rear elevation of this wing has a large ashlar, c1900 addition in neo-Tudor style with red tile roof, stone coped gables and stone side wall stacks. C18 wing is six bays and two storeys plus attics, and the C17 wing is also six bays but only two storeys. Garden front of C18 wing has a stone Doric porch with a fluted and roundelled frieze supported on columns and pilasters, and a semi-circular headed doorcase with double glazed panelled doors and a traceried fanlight. To the north is a large stone, early C19 canted bay window with glazing bar sashes to three sides, below rusticated wedge lintels with double keystones, and beyond to north is another glazing bar sash below similar lintel. To south of the doorcase is a large late C18 tripartite glazing bar sash in a rusticated surround also with rusticated wedge lintel with double keystone. Beyond to south is another stone canted bay window, probably early C20, with glazing bar sashes below similar lintels, and a further similar glazing bar sash. Above there are six similar glazing bar sashes. Above again in the roof there are four hipped gabled dormers with casements. Attached to far south is the gable wall of the C17 wing which has been rebuilt in brick and has C20 window under segment head to ground floor, with glazing bar sash under plain stone lintel above and a C20 casement attic window in the gable. The rear elevation of the C18 wing has an advanced bay with a semi-circular bay window to south and attached to north, a four-centred arched doorcase with coat of arms and embattled parapets over. Windows have recessed and chamfered, mullions and transoms and leaded lights. Attached to south-west is the C17 wing, which has a four-light recessed and chamfered mullion C17 window with central major mullion to west with a similar window above. To east is a full height, 4-light recessed and chamfered mullioned and doubled transomed early C20 window and there is a similar window some way further east. Between these two windows is a blocked early C19 segmental arch, now with C20 doors within, which is flanked to west by C17 2-light window and to east by similar 4-light window. Above is a central octagonal clock face, dated 1834, flanked by one blocked, and one open 4-light C17 recessed and chamfered mullion windows with central major mullions. Beyond again to east, there is a blocked C17 quoined door case with two C20 3-light windows beyond, one cutting into another C17 door case. Above are five 4-light recessed and chamfered mullion windows, that to west early C20, others C17. Very large additions to rear of this wing and to west are of no interest. Attached to south of this wing is a C17 stone garden wall with moulded copings and a block C17 door case with returned hoodmould over.
Interior of C18 wing has original C18 staircase with column on vase balusters, ramped and wreathed handrail and scrolled cheek-pieces. Fireplaces are mostly early C19 or early C20, except for one C18 shouldered fire surround in one of the bedrooms. Rear addition has good quality oak panelling and fittings. C17 wing has its original queen-strut roof trusses.
