DEERHURST - SO 8628-8728 11/28 Wightfield Manor (formerly listed as Wightfield 4.7.60 Manor, Apperley) - II* Former Manor House, now large farmhouse. C16, C17, both for Cassey family, early C18, for John More or John Snell, early and mid C19 for Barnard family; minor alterations C20. Coursed, squared stone to hall and porch, otherwise generally random blue lias rubble; English garden wall bond brickwork of various dates; tiled roof. Six-bay main block, 2 and 2½ storeys, originally one room deep, 3- bay, 3-storey cross wing, 2 projecting stair turrets, single-storey wing on left, various minor additions. Entrance front: plinth; iron opening lights to all windows, mullioned with hollow chamfer. Gable of cross wing on right with projecting stair turret to right: 6-light mullion and transom window, king mullion, hoodmould; small stair window to right. Above 4-light mullion, with hoodmould; 3- light mullion with hoodmould to second floor, small stair window to right. Crow-stepped gable; hipped roof to turret. Hall block slightly set back on left: two 3-light mullion and transom windows, linked hoodmould; above two 3-light mullioned windows, all four C19 in date. To left porch projects: moulded door surround, 4-centred arch, sunk spandrels with shields, one with Cassey griffin, hoodmould with circular stops; inside half-glazed door in moulded surround, 4-centred arch, sunk spandrels: bench seat each side on res-et scalloped capitals. To left of porch, slightly set back canted stone bay, 4-light mullioned window, 4- centred heads to each light. Moulded string set slightly above. On left single-storey brick wing projects. Above, 3-light mullioned window in porch, hoodmould with square stops, lean-to roof over. Chamfer to left corner porch, 4-light wooden mullion and transom windows. Above 2 gables, both brick, right wider than porch, extending to left on jettied timber: valley between over centre of wooden window. Blocked window right gable, window left. Base of stone chimney on right of slope of porch roof against hall; tall brick chimney from between gables. Right return: left end projecting stair turret, 2 small windows, hipped roof, boarded door on right return in heavy timber frame. Set back large, stone external chimney with various vertical joints: top rebuilt in brick. To right, 3-light mullion and transom windows, hoodmould, above 3-light mullion with 4-centred heads to each, sunk spandrels; 4-light wooden mullion and transom to top floor. On right projecting low brick wing, cellar and raised ground floor, stone steps to quarter landing on gable, boarded door. Back elevation: brick wing on left: 6-light casement under cambered brick arch at ground level, 2-light casement above, both windows small panes. Main house, all mullioned windows with 4-centred heads to lights and sunk spandrels. Cross wing: plinth, 2-light mullioned window, hoodmould, single-storey porch, slight projection, stone wall ends carrying scalloped capitals, framing 2 recessed orders, columns with scalloped capitals, semi-circular chevron-moulded arches over; all over boarded door with flat lintel; plain parapet. To right tripartite window, 4 pane sash under cambered stone arch: extends partly into lean-to against right return of cross wing, with further lean-to against its right return for a cupboard. Above, 4- light mullioned window as below, 4-light wooden mullion and transom to second floor: crow-stepped gable coming down to lower eaves on right. Set back on right stone wall, offset above: opening at right end. Above, on left, lateral chimney, top rebuilt in grey brick. To right 3-light and small casement windows, catslide roof over. Stair turret projects on right: 2 small windows, hipped roof: further window left return. Set back to right stone wall: C20 metal window infilling former fireplace opening (itself an alteration): ends of 2-light mullioned window to right, cut down to form doorway and later blocked. Above short lengths of moulded string course. Above, 4-light mullioned window with hoodmould; blocked opening to right. Shallow 3-light casement with leaded lights under eaves: eaves raised or rebuilt in brick. Interior: cross passage taken out of hall, heavy chamfer to beams forming 12 compartments, pyramid stops over passage. In hall oven to left rear, low dome, rebate for door, ogee arch carved in lintel, segmental stone arch over with herringbone pattern on keystone. To right lower door opening to fire box, opening into oven. Armorial glass of second half C16 in window. Corner cupboard, panelled door, semi-circular head with dummy keystone, shaped shelves, dentil cornice. Six-panel C17 door to cross wing. Timber-framed wall to left of cross passage: 'Delft' tile frame to fireplace recess front room, wooden bars fixed to underside one beam in room behind: C18 window in end wall, and above. Front room in cross wing panelling first half C17, eared surround to fireplace with paterae over, moulded shelf, 'Delft' tiles frame grate. Two panelled doors, reeded surrounds with corner paterae, fanlight over door to rear. Close-studded timber framing between next room and rear'passage: heavy chamfer to ceiling beams. Stirs to right cross wing and rear cross passage spiral, solid treads around a mast, treads faced up ground to first floor in each case. First floor, C17 panelling to porch room, with cupboard in wall; 3-panel door. Left room over hall panelling of first half C17; rooms over hall originally one, with ceiling divided into 6 by beams with heavy chamfer. In front room of cross wing ovolo- moulded stone fireplace surround, interrupted at corners: flat lintel. Angle-strut truss to stair turret: main roof heavy tie- beam and principal rafters, queen struts and collar, 2 or 3 pairs butt purlins, square ridge. Panel of Jacobean carved wood in wall at head of main stairs. On site of earlier house, early C16, porch and service wing; hall rebuilt later, then cross wing and stairs incorporating stone from Priory. Later brick alterations to service end. 1920's porch at rear said to be made from pieces of Norman stonework found in grounds and embedded in later C16 work. (V.C.H.
