Under the Hill House

II

Large detached dwelling. Early C18. Smooth rendered, stone slate roof, wood
modillion cornice to main blocks. Complex double-L form, with principal hipped roof
block and secondary gabled extension; octagonal wooden turret with weather vane, dated
1726. Three storeys plus dormers, five windowed; two hipped dormers with two-light
casements, leaded, later C18 sashes with glazing bars, first and second floors, ground
floor five lofty sashes, without bars; central unit possibly formerly door opening.
Six-panel fielded door, entry from Lane. Two three-light hipped dormers in back
element, this part older than 1726 front.
Good C19 stair with plain square balusters and mahogany rail; C18 window shutters.
Lindley, p.125, supposes the building to have begun as outbuildings to Edbrooke House.
