DATCHWORTH BURNHAM GREEN ROAD TL 21 NE (Northwest side) Bull's Green 3/25 No. 20 24.11.66 (Rat's Castle Cottage) - II
House, once 4 dwellings. C17 probably in 2 builds, altered and extended early C20. Timber frame with C20 pargetted rendering. Knapped flint and red brick plinth. Thatched roof. A long narrow range of 2 axially linked 3 bay buildings separated by a straight joint, through passage to left with inserted stack, right end stack to right. Later bay added to far right. Originally 1 storey and attic. 2 recessed plank doors to right bay of each 3 bay group. Six 3 light small pane flush frame casements, 1 of 2 lights. 4 dormers, 2 and 3 light small pane casements, 2 with pargetted panels below sills, thatched hoods. Early stacks to left and right, later to centre, all on ridge with C19 rebuilt caps. Left gable end flint and brick on ground floor with a 3 light casement, weatherboarded gable with 2 small lights. Right end whitewashed brick with a 3 light casement, hipped roof. To rear: 5 small single lights, 2 doors, an exposed post, some flint and brick. Interior: floor removed now open to clasped purlin roof, struts to collars, some straight windbraces, timber lintel to early fireplace.
