8/178 Stableblock c20m north of Halewell Close GV II
Stable block in grounds of Halewell Close. Dated and initialled 'R.J.C 1929' on rectangular stone plaque over central access arch. Architect Leslie Mansfield (q.v. Halewell Close). Coursed, squared roughly dressed limestone and rendered brick, stone slate roof, stone stack. 'L'-shaped plan. Wing at rear now converted for domestic accommodation. South front; colonnade of round stone piers, comprising 3-bays either side of gabled central round-headed access arch. Stable doors and single casements with rectangular leaded panes at rear of colonnade within rendered brick wall. Colonnade entered from central through access arch via 2 segmental- headed openings forming pitching door with projecting girder for pulley at right gable end, now with C20 glazed door inserted. Three-light stone-mullioned casements and 2-light casement to ground floor and 2-light C20 roof dormer right. Three-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casements in opposite gable end with single pigeon hole with landing towards apex. North front; wing projecting forwards left formerly with 3 open-fronted bays now blocked with C20 wood casements and doors without glazing bars inserted in limestone blocking, two C20 roof dormers with 2 wood casements to upper floor. Rear wall of stable block. Double- chamfered, 2-light stone-mullioned casement over central access arch, single similar casements flanking entrance arch, pitching door within gabled dormer from eaves right with hung tile on sides. Rectangular stones with circular ventilation holes below. Axial stack with moulded capping right of gabled access arch.
