8/184 The Mill Inn GV II
Inn.Early C18 and late C18, substantial extensions at rear c1960 by D. Stratton Davis. Coursed squared and dressed limestone, stone slate roof, stone stacks. 'L' shaped plan. C20 flat- roofed extensions in angle at rear, not of special interest. Late C18 range left with early C18 range attached right and running back at right angles rear right. Late C18 range, 2-storey, 2-windowed facade, 12-pane sashes to first floor, 4-pane sash with horns to ground floor. C20 plank door with fillets and 'Tudor' arched head right. Windows and doors within plain architraves. Early C18 range; 1½ storeys, upper floor lit by three ½ dormers, 4-light bay window with horizontal glazing bars lower left. C19 plank and panel door right. former doorway, now with 4-pane sash inserted in blocking right, 4-pane sash with horns right within plain architrave. Right-hand wall lit by 6 hipped half dormers with 2- light C20 casements with leaded panes. Twelve-pane sash with horns and tripartite sash with horns to ground floor. Two-light casement with glazing bars right of stable type door with timber lintel. Interior: Late C18 range; deep-chamfered bressumer across full width of building. Fireback dated and initialled 1588 I.F.C. with 2 anchors, 4 fleur de lys at top, 4 rosettes at bottom and stylized vine in flanking marginal panels. Open fireplace with wood bressumer in Early C18 range containing fireback dated 1699 with central roundel with 3 fleur de lys with spearheads behind inglenook seats left, and right. Extensions at rear largely rebuilt from old materials, some reused from Northleach Prison. (Michael Stourton; The Mill Inn, the Mill House and Withington, [1972.)]
