1/76 North entrance to Sapperton Canal 4.6.52 Tunnel

II

Entrance to canal tunnel under Sapperton Hill, built 1784-89 to link the Thames and Severn Canal. Engineer Josiah Clowes. Originally had Gothic castellations, now disappeared. Round arch with V-joint voussoirs and dropped triple keystone under plat band. Squared masonry with end and centre pilaster strips. The world's longest tunnel at time of construction.
