BEVERSTON - ST 89 NE 3/20 Barn and adjoining cartshed, with archway linking to stable/coach block at Chavenage Manor Farm GV II

Former barn, converted to squash court, with cartshed on north west end, and large stable/coach block to south east linked to barn by archway with dovecote above. Barn probably late C16, stable/coach block of mid/late C19, remainder possibly contemporary with barn, or of C17. Random coursed rubble stone with flush quoins, stone slate roof, with coped verges and saddlestone to all but cartshed. Barn has steep pitched roof, in 2 bays with dividing stepped buttress to each side and slit vent to each bay, interior completely renewed to form squash court except for one Tudor archway remaining at upper level. Cartshed of 2 bays with some chamfered beams and probable granary over with 10 stone steps up on south west side to plank door with cathole. Archway has large round arch at each end and small structure over with dove holes in north gable end and blind moulded oval light on west side. Stable/coach block has central gable to front with large single light and square hoodmould. Ground floor has large stone chamfered Tudor archway with square hoodmould leading to inner vestibule with Tudor archways to each side, leading to stable on right with 2 large 2-light stone mullion and transom windows with square hoodmoulds and cutting through continuous stringcourse on lower part, and to former coach house on left, now with steel beam across front opening. Tack room to rear of vestibule with arched 2-light stone mullion and transoms flanking square headed doorway. Large sloping canopy, formerly glazed now in corrugated plastic, resting on thin iron columns.
