Controlled School

Primary school. 1853, built for Earl of Ducie, enlarged in 1880's.
Coursed and squared stone on offset plinth with alternating flush
quoins, stone slate roof with coped verges. Single main range of
tall single storey and projecting stepped bell tower, with lower
additional wing set back to right with large projecting gabled
porch. Main building has 5-light stone mullions flanking bell
tower which has wooden cover to bell, and clock on south face below
which is inscribed with verse: "Make haste / when I chime / No
waste / like that of time". Stepped 3-light window on left hand
return. Porch has arched stone doorway with wide plank door and
inscription above from Psalm 34, verse 11. Room behind, added as
infant room in 1880's, has right end stone stack. Small rear
outshut to main block.
