GREAT RISSINGTON GREAT RISSINGTON VILLAGE SP 1917-2017 9/148 Gate house and the adjoining stone wall, garden seat and pergola on the south and piers and railings north of the pergola GV II Gatehouse and adjoining wall. Built during 1920s. Coursed squared and dressed limestone with dressed stone quoins. Stone slate roof. Rectangular plan to the gatehouse. The wall, pergola and garden seat on the south, piers and railing run away to the north of the gatehouse. Gatehouse; single storey. Moulded double width 4- centred arched entrance in the east facing gable end. Rectangular stone plaque with a moulded hood above. Small ventilation slit above. Double width archway in the opposite gable end. Oval stone plaque with a moulded margin and small ventilation slit above. Plank door within 'Tudor'-arched surround in the south wall. Flat coping at the gable ends and to the kneelers. Pointed finials with squared-off bases at the apex of each gable end. Wall; c2.5m in height with a cross-gabled pier c3m in height with chimney with four lancet-shaped openings in each side. Back drop to garden seat at the south-east corner of the gatehouse and attached to the wall. The back drop to the garden seat comprises a west-facing semi- circular shell-headed alcove (containing a semi-circular wooden seat) with a keystone. Band at impost level continued around the back of the alcove to either side. Segmental stone dated and initialled '19 / M / 22' (Marling) at the back of the alcove immediately above the band. Two square-headed niches each containing a column with a crown at the top then a king's (or queen's) head, then an heraldic shield. Stone flagged pathway runs away from the garden seat under a pergola now c20m in length which is attached to the south west corner of the gatehouse. The pergola comprises paired rubble-built cylindrical columns supporting a heavy horizontal timber framework. Wooden railing with stone piers with ball finials at regular intervals north of the gatehouse. (P. Cane, Modern Gardens, British and Foreign, 1926, p70-72; and J.
