Details

BARRINGTON - SP 2013-2113 10/3 Barrington Mill (formerly listed as Corn 23.1.52 Mill with Barn) GV II Former mill and house dated and initialled '17 W.C. 94'. Coursed squared and dressed limetone. Stone slate roof with ashlar stacks. Rectangular plan to main body with extension to the right gable end with washhouse/bakehouse at rear. Main body; 2 storeys and attic lit by three 2-light C20 roof dormers. Mill building occupies the 3 left-hand bays with the mill stream flowing under the left-hand bay. Three-windowed miller's house to right lit by 16-pane and 20- pane sashes within dressed stone surrounds. CentralCl8 six-panel door within a flat-chamfered surround. Flat canopy over door supported on moulded brackets. Former mill; three 2-light wooden casements with horizontal glazing bars to the mill building. One 6-pane wooden casement to first floor (formerly a doorway). Segmental-headed openings to the ground floor of the left-hand bay (now containing C20 casements) mark the alignment of the former undershot water wheel (now removed). Stable type door off-centre right of mill building. Two-light stone-mullioned casement in the left gable end lighting the attic. Single-storey extension to right with plank door with single pane at top. Two-light stone- mullioned casement to right. Flat coping at gable ends. Axial and gable-end stacks. The mill remained in use until c1948. (V.C.H. Vol. VI, P.22-23).
