SHERBORNE A40 SP 11 SE (north side) 4/172 Cheltenham Lodges including gates, gate piers and adjoining 23.1.52 walls GV II*
Pair of lodges to Sherborne House (q.v.). Mid C19. Ashlar with alternate ashlar and vermiculated quoins. Slate roofs with ashlar stacks. Wrought and cast-iron gates. Lodges rectangular in plan. Flat-roofed C20 extensions not of special interest. Lodges lie either side of gates and gate piers. Walls curve away to right and left of lodges, the whole entrance being c50m across. Lodges single storey each with a symmetrical 1:1:1 windowed facade with triangular pediment over central bay. Central bay breaks forwards slightly. Twelve-pane sashes. Sash lighting central bay within surround with alternating vermiculated and ashlar quoins. Sashes either side within moulded and lugged architraves. Moulded cornice. Entrances in returns facing gateway comprising 6-panel doors within shallow stone porches with triangular pediments. Pyramidal roofs with stacks at apex. Simple single wrought-iron gates within moulded and lugged surrounds within walls linking lodges to gate piers. Rectangular gate piers with alternate vermiculated and ashlar quoins. Shell alcove on both sides of piers. Moulded cappings with large ball finials with vermiculated band on square vermiculated plinth (q.v. gate piers at entrance to Lodge Park). Simple double wrought-iron gates with scrollwork decoration. Wrought iron overthrow incorporates the Sherborne Arms. Ramped walls c2-3m high curve away either side terminating in piers similar to gate piers but on smaller scale and without shell alcoves.
