Details

EASTINGTON CHURCHEND SO 7805 at NGR 78410568 13/57 Weir between River Frome and Kemmett Canal II Weir. Constructed c1759-60 by John Kemmett as part of Kemmett Canal, small branch of River Frome constructed to by-pass Churchend Mill (and others on River Frome) to carry freight up towards Stroud. Weir was constructed of stone and timber, now with some concrete repairs, over three arches for waterflow, and supported crane used to haul goods from lower level canal basin on to River Frome, the earliest recorded use of goods in containers. Included for historical value. (Michael Handford and David Viner, Stroudwater & Thames and Severn Canals Towpath Guide, 1984)
