Details
SO 81 SW BROOKTHORPE-with- GILBERTS LANE WHADDON (south side) 5/2 Gilbert's II
Formerly 3 cottages in Cl9; now detached house. Late C16; restored in 1939 by H. F. Trew. Timber-framed on limestone plinth; partially half-timbered with coursed rubble limestone walls; ashlar chimneys; plain tile roof. Altered to L-plan in restoration; 2- storey with attic. Front gable with single-window fenestration in original small framing; curved braces to framing and in gable; 8- light leaded mullioned and transomed timber casements to ground and upper floors, each with plain-tiled hood; casement to attic. East side has C20 outshut to left with off centred doorway flanked by small leaded casements; plank door; off centre framed gabled roof dormer above. Right half of east side has small framing and 2 window fenestration: C20 doorway to left with plank and moulded cover strip door with tiled hood continuing to 6-light leaded mullioned and transomed timber casement to right; 6-light over doorway; 8-light ground floor leaded mullioned and transomed casement to right with similar over; C20 restored ridge chimney stack with moulded cap. Half timbered C20 restored back elevation, with jettied gable end to right continuing down to outshut: single window fenestration in gable, but otherwise scattered and all leaded casements; to left of gable framed roof dormer. West side has projecting blank stone gable end to back wing on right with ridge-mounted chimney stack having moulded cap; left of this 2- storey ashlar chimney gable to side of front house with rebuilt shaft and moulded cap; this elevation has restored small framing with single timber casement to right of chimney on each floor; left side of projecting wing is half timbered with single leaded casement in restored small framing. Interior is extensively restored and altered, but one room has Jacobean stencilling on very deeply chamfered timber beams; some original stone fireplaces. H. F. Trew was responsible for many restorations of timber-framed buildings in Gloucestershire, this being a good example of his work.
