Details
SO 70 SE COALEY FIELD LANE 2/4 Field Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse. C17. Squared and coursed limestone, stone slate roof. Long gabled block and gabled extension at back, north-east end, probably built in two sections, but in quick succession; stacks at ridge at bay 5 - probably original outer gable wall - and bays, stone to ridge height, then brick. Two storeys, attic and cellar, 5+3 windowed south-west front, all stone cross-mullioned casements, plain chamfer, no drips, and plain stone string above first floor heads; C19 panelled door to bay 5, opposite straight stair, and blocked opening in bay 3, under wood lintol: this probably door to 5-bay original construction. The attics lit from upper parts of first floor windows: floor set at transome level. At back, one 3-light mullioned and transomed, as front, left of centre. C18 shutters and panelled doors inside, steep roof but relatively light structure. Stone steps from back to large cellar, vaulted at north-west end and with cross-vault at opening; another stair in stone from cellar to interior by upper stair.
The property shows signs of considerable modification at an early stage, including some rebuilt walling in upper levels at back, and bell-cast to roof here suggesting a raising of eaves level.
