PAINSWICK KING'S MILL LANE SO 8609/8709 (south side)
7/146 Capp Mill House (formerly 21.10.55 listed as Cap Mill House and Mill) GV II Large mill house. Dated HSW 1678. Limestone ashlar, stone slate roofs. A lofty, symmetrical cross-gabled building with, back left, a lower projecting wing. Entrance front is two storeys and attic, 4 windows, mainly single lights, but an extra 2-light over central porch; all windows to stopped hoods. Porch is gabled with date in shield, moulded door surround to deep lintel block with hoodmould; porch. Interior has benches each side, and a fine early plank door. To sides are oculis with decorated spandrels. Gables are coped and carry stacks with twin diagonal shafts and cappings. Right return is 3-storeys and attic, taking up fall in ground level, one-windowed, 3-light recessed chamfer mullion casements at 3 levels, an 2-light to gable, all with hood moulds. Coped gable and cross-roll saddle. Back is 3 storeys and attic, twin-gabled, but that to right mainly covered by the projecting wing. To left at ground floor a doorway flanked by 2-light, at first floor a 4-light with king mullion, above which a 3-light, and 2-light to attic: gable coped, with cross-roll saddle. Between gables 3-small stair lights, and in right, coped gable with single diagonal stack, two single lights to attic. Wing return is two storeys and attic, one- windowed; 3-light at ground and first floors beneath 3-light gabled flush dormer. To the left is a half-dormer abutting the gable of the main block. Large door opening far right. The end gable wall of the wing appears to have been rebuilt, in squared and coursed stone, possibly cutting back from a longer building. It ha a 2-windowed front of 1 over 2 over 3-light casements, and double diagonal stack to coped gable. Interior has A frame roof with butt purlins. At lowew ground floor is a heavy early C18 bolection mould fire surround with mantel over, said to have been repositioned from a bedroom, and a similar surround in the projecting wing. The bedroom in north-east corner has a fluted pilaster door surround. Inner door to porch especially fine. This was originally the house to a woollen mill, until 1729, in the ownership of the Packer family. It later became a Saw Mill, and the mill building (qv) is now used for storage.
