8/186 The Lych Gate
GV II
Lych gate. 1901-02, at cost of Frances Sarah Williams. Half-timbered, flush
pilaster panels, stone slate roof. A cross-gabled structure with an upper room
over open timber structure on 4 x 5 posts set to stone bases. To the road is a
2-light wood mullioned casement; decorative barge-board. The plaster panels are
variously inscribed, including "Rejoice in the Lord", with accompanying musical
notation, and on the barge-board "E.R.VIII". Inside is inscription "Built of
the Old Belfry Timber HDCCCCI-II" on this side is a four-bay opening set on a
stone breast wall with bench seat. On the churchyard face "WHS Vicar ET and CF
Churchwardens 1901. Victoria Reg Imp Requiat in Pace/Edouard Rex Imp/Requiet in
Pace/Built at the charges of Mrs Frances Sarah Williams 1901". Above the
through-way is a parish room or office.
