19/240 Forwood West and Forwood East

II

Formerly large detached house, now 2 houses. Mid-late C17; enlarged and extensively restored early-mid C19 for Playne family. Random rubble limestone, roughcast-faced except rear; ashlar chimneys; stone slate roof. Two-storey with attic. Front: 4 parapet gables, 3 to right forming symmetrical element with smaller central gable, this having doorway with 2-light mullioned casement above and small niche in gable apex, ball finial. Canted bay window to outer pair of gables with 3-light upper floor and 2-light attic mullioned casements above, all apparently C19 replacements. Further gable to left with mixed C19 fenestration. Flat roofed addition in angle with gabled wing to right. Good set of 5 ridge- mounted chimneys with paired shafts, combined moulded caps with tapering square stone pots. Parapet gabled ends. Rear: various gabled wings. Interior not inspected: probably extensively altered in Cl9. (N.M. Herbert, 'Minchinhampton' in V.C.H. Glos. xi, 1976, pp 184- 207)
