Monument to Lord Ellenborough's aides. Mid C19. Limestone;
artificial stone slate roof. Square open-sided plan with basement
room. Stepped plinth on 2 sides. Five semi-circular steps on the
east side. Steps down to plank door to basement on the west side.
Parapet with star-shaped openings, in a state of collapse at the
time of resurvey - May 1987, with entrance on the east side.
Paired cusped arches with central pendants on all four sides.
Octagonal memorial at centre (matching marble font in the Church of
the Ascension, Southam q.v.) with lotus flower decoration and
running floral motifs. Partially eroded inscriptions commemorating
colleagues and campaigns e.g. 'NAPIER GOVERNOR OF SCINDE. MEEANEE.
HYDERABAD'. Partially eroded inscription on the upper surface of
the memorial with inscription 'TO THE HONOUR OF THE BRAVE MEN /
-----UNDER HIS GOVERNMENT / RESTORED VICTORY TO OUR ARMS IN INDIA
/ ------ DICTATED PEACE TO C-----NA / ---- -- WALES OF NAN-N /
-----RECORDING THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS / DICTATED WITH GRATEFUL
AFFECTION / TOWARD LORD ELLENBOROUGH'. Lists of names facing
inwards above the arches including the inscription 'THE NAMES UPON
THESE WALLS / ARE THOSE OF OFFICERS MILITARY AND CIVIL / TO WHOSE
ASSISTANCE LORD ELLENBOROUGH / WAS MORE ESPECIALLY INDEBITED / FOR
THE SUCCCESS OF HIS ADMINISTRATION / IN INDIA'. Monument and
