10/80 Robert Briggs monument in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary
GV II*
Chest tomb to Robert Briggs, senior, died 1709. and Edward Briggs, date of death illegible. Limestone. Moulded plinth. Raised rectangular inscription panel with a moulded margin and water leaf decoration on the north side. Figure of man in contemporary dress, holding a hat in one hand to the left. Figure of a woman holding flowers within an alcove formed by drapery, skull and palm leaves below. Similar inscription panel on the south side, flanked by the figures of two women: the woman on the left is smaller than the other with an eroded swag above and a winged hourglass below, the taller woman stands within an alcove formed by drapery. Lyre- shaped ends. Cherub holding an open bible at the east end; cartouche-like decoration and fruit at the west end. Thick capping with moulded margin. The representations of full figures in contemporary dress make this monument particularly unusual.
