GV II
Large house now school, 1897-1901 by F.W. Waller of Gloucester for J.H. Selwyn Paine, but incorporating parts of an earlier house by Thomas Rickman and his pupil Henry Hutchinson. Red brick, slate roof, basically rectangular plan. Two storeys. Entrance front: central projecting porch with a shaped gable; moulded red sandstone entrance arch with keystone and carved spandrels; decoration above the door, obscured by ivy; 3-light window with ovolo-moulded windows above, moulded sill continued as string course around the porch; parapet with moulded cornice; heraldic shield with a lion, 3 clam shells and a fleur de lys within a strapwork surround decorating the gable. Gable formerly with 3 spiked ball finials, only one now remains. Bull's-eye window to the right-hand-return. Five-light sandstone window with ovolo- moulded mullions and two transoms to the left of the porch with heraldic stained glass. Projecting chimney stack set back to the left, flanked by bull's-eye windows with ornately carved surrounds with cable mouldings, keystone and carved foliate spandrels at ground floor level; heraldic shield with a segmental moulded hood at first floor level. All windows sandstone with hexagonal and diamond-leaded glazing. Three-bays to the right of the entrance porch: 12-pane sashes with horns and gauged brick heads to the ground floor; three 9-pane sashes to the first floor; band between the--floors. Parapet to the left of the shaped gable formerly with finials, now lost. Gablet with bull's-eye window and a raised ornate C17 style surround upper right. Five-windowed garden front with central double glass doors with glazing bars; segmental-headed tripartite sash with keystone above. Projecting shaped gables either side with tripartite sashes, gauged brick heads and keystones to the ground floor; tripartite sashes to the first floor with fan patera and a round-headed arch with a keystone to the central part of the window; 12-pane sash with a gauged brick head and keystone to the right; 9-pane sash above; square sundial with the inscription 'TEMPUS FUGIT' and a fan patera set within a simplified shaped gable above. Parapet with moulded cornice and ball finials. Gable-end and axial stacks, mostly twin. Interior: Jacobethan hall (now ceiled in). Six-panel doors with fielded panels. Drawing room with C17 style moulded plaster ceiling; moulded cornice; round-headed niches. Doric columns flanking access from a smaller room off the drawing room. (Particulars of sale 1918.
