SO 92 SW UCKINGTON UCKINGTON VILLAGE

9/201 Moat House

GV II

Large detached house. Early C17 core extensively altered early C19, probably by John Buckle. C17 core stone built, C19 alterations in brick. Exterior now mostly rendered. Entrance front and left-hand return. Slate roof with ashlar and brick stacks. 'U'-shaped plan. Two storeys and attic. 1:3:1 windowed entrance front with gables projecting forwards right and left. Single-light, 2, 3 and 5-light hollow-chamfered stone- mullioned casements (probably C19 replacements) with leaded panes and stopped hoods. C19 fielded 6-panel door at rear of a flat- roofed open-sided flat-roofed porch off-centre left. Three- windowed left-hand return lit by 16-pane sashes. One 20-pane sash within a pointed surround with a pointed stopped hood at the centre of the ground floor. Similar pointed surround and hood to 16-pane sash to the first floor above. Stopped hoods to the ground floor windows. Band between ground and first floors. Axial stacks. Single large projecting ashlar stack with offsets rear left. Interior not accessible but according to the Victoria County History a two-storey stone hall block of c1600 with indications of a screens passage at the west end remains at its centre. This range probably extended further west and had a cross wing to the east. The house lies on a moated site. (V.C.H. Vol VIII, p53-54)
