Large detached house. C17 and C19. Square-panelled timber framing with painted brick infill and brick. Stone slate roof to main body (some red tile in process of being replaced at time of resurvey, April 1986). Artificial stone slate roof on C19 extension at rear. Main body probably 'H'-shaped in plan. Short C19 extension at centre at rear. Long rectangular C19 extension rear right. Main body; 2 storeys and attic with a single central 2-light roof dormer with early rectangular leaded panes to attic. Almost symmetrical facade with gables (formerly with jettied first floor) projecting forwards left and right. Timber-framing on ground floor now encased in brick; C20 imitation sash to ground floor of left-hand gable. Two 12-pane sashes at same level to right-hand gable. First floor of both gables lit by two sashes within wide frames. Two-windowed central portion between gables with 2-light probably early C19 metal casements with moulded transoms, those on the ground floor have early rectangular leaded panes and blind cambered-arched surrounds. Two-light casement to attic in right-hand gable. Central C19 part-glazed door set back within a C20 gabled porch, C20 part-glazed door with aluminium frame at front of porch within a 'Tudor'-arched surround with hood. Surman family crest on gable. Left-hand return; 12-pane sashes to ground floor one early-mid C18 with wide glazing bars. C20 part- g1azed door far left. Metal cross windows with leaded panes matching those at centre of entrance front to first floor. Right- hand return; brick gable end. Five-light oriel window to rear left-hand gable. Twin diagonally-set stacks rising from fireplace in back wall of central hallway, off-the-ridge and axial stacks. subsidiary features; C19 brick walls run forwards from corners of entrance front, both with segmental-headed archways to garden. Pier at end of right-hand wall, part ashlar, part brick, with moulded limestone capping and ball finial. Similar but brick pier to left-hand wall where it returns left for c30m along the roadside. Interior; C1 panelling to dado height (possibly reused) some with lozenge motif. Late C17-early C18 bolection moulded fireplace with highly ornate carved reused C18 panel with winged angel's head at centre over fireplace (probably reused). C17 dogleg staircase with barley-twist balusters and ball finials rises from rear of entrance hall. Back staircase with turned balusters and dog gate. Early ovolo-moulded wood-mullioned windows with early diamond leaded panes now obscured by a later extension at rear. Once known as Hall Place. Strongly associated with the Surman family. (V.C.H.
