2/39 The Old Rectory (formerly listed as Rectory) 8.7.52
- II*
C17 and C18. 2 storeys and attic. A large house originally with gabled projecting wings to the main (east) front. This was altered in the C18, to form a continuous symmetrical facade, with large 2-storeyed bays (each of 3 windows) planted on the wings. The centre is of 3 parts, with a Venetian window above the doorway (now masked by a modern glazed porch), 3 other windows have been filled to make panels leaving one window on the upper floor. Red tile roof, hipped over bays (below the older gables). Casements, mullion and transom to ground floor bays). The south elevation has 3 gabled dormers, and the wall has an exposed timber frame, and a massive chimney breast (tapering upwards) at the east end; also a large bay on the ground floor; casements. Walling and frame infill of red brickwork. Famed as the residence of Charles Kingsley 1844-75 listed II* for literary associations. The "Water Babies" was written here.
