2/47 Firgrove House (formerly, listed as Firgrove Manor) 8.7.52

- II*

Mainly early C18 and later C19, also C19 and modern extensions. Main (north) front of late C18 is a symmetrical design, with 3 storeyed centre flanked by 2 storeys: 3 (bay):3 3 (bay) windows. Centrepiece has a pediment-shaped gable (slate roof) with full mouldings. Red brickwork, with slightly cambered rubbed arches to square attic windows and tall openings to 1st and 2nd floors, stone plinth. The modillion cornice at 2nd floor level continues round the angular bays on each side, where they have a balustrade above: the flanking roofing is in red tiles. Sashes in reveals. Doorcase is a full Ionic order with 3/4-columns, on 3 stone steps, enclosing a 6-panelled door. Modern wing to west of 1 storey and attic. To the east a C19 extension of 2 storeys, 1:1 windows in similar style but with a slate roof. The rear (south) elevation of the earlier period is of 3 bays, 2:1:2 windows, with 3 hips to the red tile roofing, a full modillion cornice: red brickwork (Flemish bond with blue headers), 1st floor band, sashes in exposed frames (a central ground floor Victorian small bay window). The return east face of 4 windows (2 blank) has on the ground floor an open colonnaded porchway, which continues behind the C19 eastern extension of the north front. Complex roofing seen from the rear indicates the several phases of construction. Interior includes oak-panelled room, oak doors and cases, staircases. See Country Life Vol XCIII.
