ST MARY BOURNE
CHURCH STREET
Church of St Peter

I

All periods. Chancel, nave with aisles, western tower, south porch, north vestry.
The wide Norman chancel arch remains, and the originally aisleless nave is pierced
with plain pointed transitional arches resting on square piers with inset corner
columns, having moulded bell-caps or convoluted scallops, the arcades being unequal.
The chancel of circa 1300 (restored 1855) has traceried lights and stepped reveals, a
piscina, and a priest's door. The south aisle (Wyber Aisle) was widened in the C14,
and has an ogee arched recess with a 'crusaders' effigy, and a C18 chandelier. The
nave has a large Tournai black marble font (1150-1200) with a modern base. Wall
paintings include texts in the nave and south aisle and a Royal Coat of Arms of
Charles I; there are painted benefaction boards, a lectern of circa 1700, and the
remains of a silk altar frontal of 1687. Externally, the walls are of flint with
stone dressings; the chancel has buttresses, reticulate tracery and a recent east
window. The south aisle has a stone moulded parapet. The plain tower has a C16
parapet and upper coupled openings beneath hood moulds. Most of the windows are
Victorian. The porch is timber-framed with lower brick walls. The steep tiled roof
of the chancel (mid C19) contrasts with the low pitched lead roof (of recent date)
spanning the nave and aisles.
