Details
BOTLEY ROAD 1. 5231 (South West Side) Swanwick No 159 SU 5109 16/287 II 2. Early C17. Timber framed cottage. Substantial framing with red brick infilling (some panels plastered). Half hipped thatched roof carried low over single storey southern part. Additional single storey timber framed northern outshut with pantiled roof. Centre chimney stack. Thatched centre porch. 1 and a half storeys with 1 dormer. 3 windows. Interior has walls with exposed square panel framing (some wattle and daub infill remains). Thick ceilings of mud and straw. Jacobean fireplaces, former bread oven and cast iron early C17 fireback found under later grate. Original staircase beside stack with triangular blocks of oak as steps, now replaced by modern staircase. Some, possibly earlier, moulded and stopped ceiling beams. Roof has collars, tie beams and wind braces. Very low doors to upper floor. Village forge (which was across the road but is now demolished) formerly belonged to the Harper family who lived in this cottage.
