Details
KINGS SOMBORNE MARSHCOURT SU 3533 13/3 Moat in front of Forecourt of Marsh Court to the N GV II Moat. 1901-5 by E L Lutyens. Grassed moat with dressed stone (some knapped flint) walls, balustrades and bridge. E-shaped N front of house with long projecting wings, U-shaped moat runs from ends of wing of same width, with long link E - W section, crossed in centre by bridge, yew hedges complete sides of courtyard while N end is open with bridge and steps down each side. Bridge has brick lined arch and moulded architrave with keyblocks. Parapet cambered up in centre. Balustraded parapet either side on far side of moat, on wall with knapped flint areas in stone. To E side wall some 3m high of similar material separate main courtyard from service range, running to corner of wing. At other end tall stone gatepier originally with finial. On courtyard end of bridge roadway widens bounded by short length of balustrade. Then either side 6 wide steps down to moat. S balustraded wall of moat overlooks lower W walk. Burning in front of wings flight of steps into moat, and pathway across it, on one side further flight descends to Long Walk, on other passing through arch in screen wall to flight of steps rising in front of service range.
