Details
KINGS SOMBORNE MARSHCOURT SU 3533 13/8 Sunken Garden on S of W wing of Marsh Court GV II* Sunken garden. 1901-5 by E L Lutyens. Stone steps with flint and stone risers, surrounding wall brick (except end of flint and stone), with stone piers and balustraded parapet. In front of W end of S front, which has an exposed basement overlooking garden, with walls running S from SW corners of house and projecting 5 bay some 20m, joined at S end by 10m long wall pierced by gateway with steps up to it. In centre,pool 2m by 8m having dolphin fountain in centre and all round a step below surface of water and 4 steps above up to walkway. Below walkway at corners and third intervals small flower beds containing fountain heads. Above walkway low wall around flower beds on sides and retaining lawn against house. Halfway along sides, cutting beds, flight of 3 steps to lead tanks inscribed '1904 HJ' on tile piers, tank missing on one side. Above each, fountain which poured into narrow conduit cut in steps down to pond. Walls on each side have stone piers every 2m with stone balustraded parapet running along top. S end has 3 steps up to level of beds on sides then 6 semi-circular steps up to gateway in wall of stone and flint with similar detail to side walls. Gatepiers moulded with moulded offset base and head.
