4/78 Wheatley End Cottage

II

Cottage, formerly a pair. C16, C17, late C18, with C20 restoration. Walls of brick and stone, with a thatched roof. A late medieval timber frame'of 2 bays, with a massive. chimney attached at each end (and lst floor inserted), extended at each end as a timber frame, modified to form 2 dwellings, with a doorway at each end: now returned to one. Symmetrical south elevation of 2 storeys, 4 above 6 windows. Hipped roof with eyebrows to 2 ½-dormers, catslide at rear. Tile-hung upper wall, the ground floor now clad in brickwork of Flemish bond, with a plinth. Casements of the paired middle windows one has been lowered to make a French window. At each end the upper walls are tile hung; the lower having exposed framework with painted brick infill, the end of the outshot, being of malmstone: casements, boarded doors in plain frames. The rear (north elevation to the lower roadway) has 2 windows, upper walls of brickwork in Flemish bond and lower of malmstone with brick dressings (quoins and verticals). The interior exposes the original structure and there is a dog-leg stair beside the chimney breast - the upper floor has 2 rooms to each side, separated by a timber-framed cross-wall.
