Details

ANSTEY ROAD 1. 5236 Amery Hill School (Lower School). Formerly listed as Eggar's Grammar School) SU 7240 1/1 II 2. Formerly Eggar's Grammar School, founded in 1642 by John Eggar whose initials in iron are in the left-hand gable. 2 storeys plus attic; 3 bays wide. Red brick; tiled roof with central stack of 4 chimneys. Ground floor with central ledged oak door with original knocker in heavy moulded oak frame within later porch flanked on either side by two 5-light mullioned and transomed casement windows. Moulded band at 1st floor level. 1st floor with central 3-light mullioned casement window with, either side, two 5-light mullioned and transomed casement windows. A single 3-light mullioned attic window in each gable with small former window between the 2 gables. A plain band at foot of the gables is carried down over the windows to form a drip mould. At the back an irregular, mainly C18, addition. The left-hand part of the building is a modern addition apeing the C17 style. VCH, Hants II, pp 367 and 482.
