BEAULIEU BEAULIEU MANOR ESTATE SU 3802/3902 Remains of outer wall around 17/15 cloister and foundations of Abbey Church (Formerly listed as 8.10.59 Remains of Abbey Church) GV I Remains of outer walls of cloister with entrances to various Abbey buildings, south wall of Abbey church and foundations of rest. Late C13, restored 1900-10 by Sir H Brakespear. Dressed, coursed Caen and Binstead stone, rubble stone core. Plan of cloister approximately 42m square; north side is south aisle wall of Abbey church, and behind it foundations of rest of church exposed 1900-10; east side consists of wall of south transept with night stairs on other side, doorway to vestry, triple arched opening to Chapter House and doorway probably to passage; south wall has from east, stairs to dorter, remains of lavatorium, north wall of Frater, now parish church of the Blessed Virgin and Child, and doorway to kitchen; west wall formed one side of lay brothers lane to Abbey church (Domus forms other), centre part taken down, doors near either end. North side is south aisle wall, with doors into cloister at either end of 2 or 3-orders of shafts and arches with several mouldings, and stiff leafed capitals. Rest of wall has pointed niches with chamfered jambs and under seats. East side has at north, west wall of transept, beside steps to aisle door is small pointed niche, near end is large vaulted recess. Beyond transept is tall pointed opening to vestry. Then 3 pointed arches on clusters of shafts entrance to Chapter House with central doorway and low walls to other arches. At south end segmental doorway. South wall has at east end dorter stairs and remains of arch to warming room. Of lavatorium remains of projecting open arches, plinth and moulded capitals to basins. Frater, now parish church, is a separate item. West wall has blocked segmental door which led to kitchen. West wall has 2 segmental archways. To north lie foundations of Abbey church, plan of chapels all round ambulatory of apsidal east end, north and south transepts with east chapel, and nave with aisles.
