Details
GREATHAM FARNHAM ROAD SU 73 SE 5/13 Old Church of St John (formerly listed as the remains of the Old Church 16.3.54 of St John) II Chancel and ruined nave of the medieval church. C13. Aisleless nave and chancel. The chancel has a tiled roof and cement-rendered walls (on malmstone and ironstone), the chancel arch (C18 and filled except for a plain doorway) is oval with a keystone and impost blocks. The nave is roofless, with malmstone walls of varied height, but the arrangement of openings is clearly marked. The interior (of the chancel) has a Jacobean communion rail, an old font bowl, and wall monuments of 1772, 1785, 1786, 1821 and 1867. The chief feature is the tomb of Dame Marjory Caryll (died 1632), comprising a recumbent effigy on a classical alabaster table tomb, with a wall monument at its rear, with a Corinthian Order enclosing an arched panel.
