Details
SELBORNE BLACKMOOR SU 73 SE 6/12 Blackmoor House 2.8.73 II*
Country mansion,now divided into flats. 1869, with extensions of 1882, by Alfred Waterhouse, for Sir Roundel Palmer (1st Earl of Selborne). The walls are polygonal malmstone with Bath stone dressings (quoins, plinth, mullions and transoms). Tiled roof with dormers and the wing has gables above the upper windows; tall stacks. A building of complex asymmetry, of mainly C16 French and English style, with some Gothic details; 2 storeys and attic. The front (south) of the main block has 3.1.3 windows, arranged as 2-storeyed splayed bays beneath massive gables, and there is a later lower wing to the west side, of 2 storeys and attic, 1.3 windows. Sashes. North (entrance) elevation: a massive tapered stack containing an armorial panel, a projecting Gothic porch with gable, buttresses and recessed orders. One large and one smaller gable the latter with a traceried (Geometrical) staircase window: beyond is a Scottish baronial style range with prominent gabled dormers, burring northwards to end in a tall massive tower, having a prominent roof and tiled gables. To the north-west extends a low 2 storeyed block with gables, which turns north as a long single-storeyed (former stable) range. Interior: elaborate treatment is repeated in the main rooms and staircase of the interior. The complexity of the detailing, and the use of many varied gables, results in a deliberately picturesque effect, particularly when viewed from the (north) approach, or from the south-west. (Ref.
