Details
SU 61 NE HAMBLEDON EAST STREET, (north side) 8/14 Whitedale 12.2.87 II Country house. C18 house, with early Cl9 extension, and late C19 minor extensions. Stucco walls, the earlier part with parapet and cornice, the later with stepped plinth, 1st floor band to the main front, and architraves to window openings. The older part has a steep hipped slate roof, the later a low-pitched hipped slate roof with wide eaves supported on coupled carved brackets. The early block and the larger later block are connected along a short length of two long sides, the angles between them containing minor units. The north west elevation shows the earlier part as a regular facade of two storeys five windows (the upper centre blank and the ground-floor 2nd and 3rd bay replaced by a wide opening beneath a cambered arch. Sashes in exposed frames, the wide opening having two half-glazed doors within side windows. The north east end elevation touches the later block, which shows as a facade of two storeys and attic three windows. Sashes in reveals. The angle is filled by a single storeyed extension which ends as a Greek Doric porch, of two pilasters,two fluted columns, simplified entablature and half-glazed double doors within an architrave. The south-east elevation of the later block is a wide symmetrical facade with a half-octagonal centrepiece; two storeys, 2.1.2 windows. Minor buildings fill the south west angle, of two and one storeys, and beyond the earlier block there is a single-storeyed service wing with brick walls and tiled roof.
