Details
SHEDFIELD BOTLEY ROAD SU 51 SE 6/4 Nos 1 and 2 Aylings II
House, now two. C18, with late C19 rear extensions. Front wall of colourwashed brickwork, blue headers with red quoins, cambered arches, 1st floor band, Flemish bond with blue headers below ground-floor cill level: other walls of stetcher bond, tile hung front gable. Tile roof. Symmetrical north-east front of two storeys and attic, three windows, with gable at the east side, single-storeyed outshot at the west side, and two-storeyed wing set back at the east side. Late C18 leaded casements. Central boarded door (No 1) in a plain frame, similar doorway (No 2) in the wing. The house is named after Lieutenant Aylings, who served in the battle of the Glorious First of June 1797: it became the first post-office in 1840.
