1/11 Lainston House (formerly listed as 5/12/55 Lainston House with walls of walled gardens, Dovecote and barn to West)

Middle-sized country house. Late C17, altered C19 and C20. Brick with stone dressings, old plain tile roof with lead ridges. H-shaped late Cl7 house with C18 loggia on each side of courtyard in front of house and attached to its corners, and C20 single storey porch infilling centre of front and wing to one end, both in matching style. Front 2 storey and attic, 7 bay with 2 end bays projecting forward. In centre C20 porch having C20 glazed double doors with on both sides thin sash, all in rusticated architrave, over modillioned dornice with pediment above door, and each side 12-pane sash in lugged stone architrave, set back slightly. On 1st floor 3 C18 12-pane sashes in lugged architraves, with in centre bay a raised panel with timber pediment above. In wings 4 12-pane sashes with lugged stone architraves and 1st floor string of rubbed brick. Modillioned cornice to tall hipped roof and hipped dormer with 2-light casement on front roof of wings and either side of centre. Large central ridge stack with blind arch on each side, and symmetrical stacks just above eaves at junction of roofs. To left end L-shaped 2-storey C20 wing with sashes in raised rubbed brick architraves, and similar eaves to hipped roofs. Loggias each side in front of house are of 12-bay arcades end bays slightly projecting, with rubbed brick arches, string at impost level, string above arches with parapet on top. Inside in centre hall Edwardian with panelling and huge stone fireplace. Delft tiles and Arts & Crafts fireplaces. Behind this, library, Edwardian in Baroque style with Gibbonesque carvings. In left wing in front, late C17 staircase rebuilt early C20, and C18 Corinthian columns in timber. Behind dining room with late C17 panelling with bolection green marble fireplace. Throughout the building C19 radiators of linked fluted columns.
