FERNHAM
THE DAIRY HOUSE
(Formerly listed as Manor Farmhouse)

Farmhouse. Early-C18, with mid-C19 re-fitting and small late-C19 dairy extension. Rubble stone with brick dressings, on stone plinth. Steep pitch tile roof with brick end stacks. Central entrance to lobby and stair flanked by 2 rooms to each of 2 storeys plus attic.
EXTERIOR: South elevation with 3 casements over two and central entrance with original main door, all finely gauged brick lintels with quoined sides. Single dormer. East gable with small blocked windows. North elevation with symmetrical 3 window openings to each floor, one with 12-pane sash, the rest blocked, but retaining their finely gauged lintels and quoins. Late-C19 extension to west with dairy to ground floor.
INTERIOR: Ground floor has main door with strap metal hinges and original hardware. To east, parlour has boxed spine beam, C19 wood surround fireplace with corbelled brackets each with 3 pyramid studs, and flanking cupboards with 2-panel doors. To west, kitchen has wide, C19 stone fireplace similarly detailed to that in parlour, and a chamfered and stopped spine beam. Stair is boxed-in at ground to first floor, with short run of balusters at the top, now removed. From first to attic floor, a complete run of moulded closed string stair with vase balusters, a wide moulded handrail, and a heavy square newel. Similar balusters and newels to attic balustrade. First floor east room has bolection moulding fireplace, similarly flanked by cupboards with 2-panel doors. Wide wooden floor boards at first floor and attic. Roof structure comprises 2 trusses with ties at attic floor level, collars and double purlins. Central truss has been carefully in-filled with boarding forming a partition. Lathe and plaster finish to ceiling.
An excellent survival of a farmhouse with an early-C18 core that retains several high quality fittings, its plan form and roof of that early date, and that was re-fitted in the mid-C19 when the farm was remodelled.
