GV II
Formerly pump room and baths to Nottington Spa, now private detached house. 1830. By Robert Vining. For Thomas Shore (RCHME). Smooth rendered and scribed, slate roof. EXTERIOR: a lofty octagonal building in 3 storeys and basement, with a central octagonal brick stack to the pyramidal roof. Each face is contained in full-height panelled pilasters. At second floor all windows are 12-pane sashes on a sill band, except to the S, which has a blind panel, and first floor has 16-pane, again with a blank to the S (the road side). At ground floor there are two 2-light casements, (one of these with margin-pane glazing), one 16- and one 20-pane sash, a blind panel to the E, and, to the NE, an arched opening with a pair of glazed doors with margin bars, under a fanlight, and on 2 steps. The original projecting gabled porch, to the SE, has a sash in an arch, and, in the position of the former doorway, a 16-pane sash with a blind panel below. On the W side is a late C20 small lean-to porch and door. The basement has four 2-light casements remaining. A plain string at first floor, and a small plinth. INTERIOR: is divided by a central N/S wall, with the fireplaces, and the basement is said to retain the pump. HISTORICAL NOTE: the 1867 Kelly's Directory, in the entries for Broadway ('..more properly spelled Broadwey...') says of The Spa '... the waters are of that quality termed hepatic of sulphereous. The late proprietor erected a handsome Spa House... consisting of a pumproom, with warm, cold shower, and vapour baths.' (RCHME: Dorset, South-East: London: 1970-: 360; Kelly's Directory: Kelly ER: Dorset: London: 1867-: 25).
