SU 73 NW 1/18 Sandals Cottages, Nos 1, 2 and 3
- II
Row of cottages. C17 range, altered in C18 and refenestrated in C20. Built of brick with some Flemish bond to north elevation and a rather random bond to end of north elevation, on brick and cemented plinth, with some stone to ground floor of No 1: tiled roof, half-hipped at ends. L-shaped range of 1 storey and attics to 2 storeys. Nos 2 and 3 have, to east elevation, some C17 brickwork in random bond a C17 brick chimneystack and end chimneystack. 3 C20 metal casements. 2 modern plank doors. Row has 3 C20 casements and modern door. No 1 has stone to ground floor and brick above and the gable is tile hung. 3 C20 metal framed casements. Row has projecting hipped projections to No 1 with 5 shaped iron tie and 3 C20 casements and modern door to rear of No 1. No 1 has a Cl7 2 inch chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stop, a C19 winder stair and curved tension brace visible in the roof. No 2 has a wide brick open fireplace having a wooden bressumer with chamfer and lamb's tongue stop. 1 wooden seat and later Cl7 oak cupboard with H hinges. Another room on the ground floor has a 2 inch chamfer axial beam with lamb's tongue stops. Large collar beam to 1st floor. No 3 has 2 rooms with axial beam with 2 inch chamfer and lamb's tongue stop. Upstairs in the passage are a few wide original floorboards. The roof appears to be of through purlin type with no ridge piece, collar beam and angled queen struts.
