4/23 Blackalls -

GV II

House. Probably C17 or earlier. Rendered cob with a thatched roof gabled at the left end, hipped at the right end. Left end stack with brick shaft, rear lateral stack with brick shaft. Rear wing with hipped thatched roof. The plan is probably a 3 room and passage house, the lower end to the left heated by the end stack, the hall heated by the rear lateral stack with an unheated inner room at the right. A rear projection at the left may be a truncated lateral stack which could have heated the lower end before the end stack was added. The rear right wing adjoining the inner room appears to be unheated although the 1948 list description refers to a "large external chimney". Single-storey lean-to to rear of main range. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front, the eaves thatch eyebrowed over the first floor windows. Shallow gabled porch with tiled roof to left of centre. Casement windows of 2 lights with 2,3,6 and 8 panes. No access to interior at time of survey (1985). The exterior is very unspoiled by C20 alterations and internal features of interest may survive, including the possibility of medieval roof timbers. Group value with Spurway Farmhouse.
