Farmhouse, divided into 2. Circa late C17 with late C20 renovations. Colourwashed
rendered cob and stone; slate roofs; 5 stacks with brick shafts.
The present plan is a single depth main range with a crosswing at the left end and a
rear wing. The crosswing and left hand room of the main range are the earliest
dateable parts of the building and are probably the hall and parlour wing of a late
C17 house, the hall heated from an axial stack and the parlour heated from an end
stack at the front. There are few early features visible elsewhere in the building,
which has been re-roofed, but the right hand end of the main range has a chamfered
cross beam and the whole of the main range is likely to be late C17 in origin and may
have been a 2 or 3 room and through passage plan. The rear wing is probably a C19
kitchen wing with a lateral stack, an adjoining lean-to has been converted to a C20
kitchen.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front, the main range roof hipped at the right end,
the crosswing gabled at the front. Lean-to porch to left of centre with front door
that leads into narrow passage behind hall stack. A small gabled turret in the angle
between the crosswing and main range is slate-hung on the right side. Fenestration
of C20 2- and 3-light casements with glazing bars. The right return of the crosswing
has 1 ground floor and 1 first floor 3-light casement, 8 panes per light.
Interior: The left hand room of the main range has a deeply chamfered unstopped
cross beam and a large open fireplace with brecchia jambs; the lintel has been cut
away and the fireplace is open to the cambered relieving arch above. A recess
adjacent to the fireplace probably originally contained a newel stair. The parlour
has a C20 grate but a late C17 ceiling of decorated plasterwork survives, including a
frieze and individual motifs of lions and roses. 2 other rooms in the ground floor
have chamfered cross beams.
The plaster ceiling is not noted by K and C French.
