3/5 Barn about 100 metres south east of - Dunchideock House and garden wall to garden south and east of Dunchideock House

II

Barn and garden walls. Probably C18, the barn with some C20 repair. Unrendered cob barn on stone footings, the rear wall repaired in concrete block faced with cob; tiled roof hipped at ends (probably formerly thatched), rear lateral stack. Whitewashed plastered cob garden wall with slate capping and C19 iron gates. A circa late C18 threshing barn, the north end wall adjacent to the road. The barn originally had opposed double doors but in the early C20 when it is said to have been converted to a theatre for parish theatricals, 3 circa early C17 windows and a co- eval fireplace were introduced, a rear lateral chimney being added in place of the rear doorway. The front elevation has large double doors in a doorway with a timber lintel. To the right of the doorway a 4- light early C17 Beerstone ovolo-moulded window and a similar 2-light window to left of doorway; further small doorway on front at right. Similar 4-light window in north end, facing the road. No access to interior at time of survey (1985) but early C17 fireplace said to exist. The early C17 features are said to have originated from a house at Chagford. The cob garden wall is adjacent to the road and forms a group with the barn and Dunchideock House (q.v.).
