CHUDLEIGH SX 88 SE 1/32 Stable block to the north-east of Whiteway House
GV II
Stable block, partly converted to garage. Probably early C18 with C20 alterations. Garden wall bond brick, colourwashed and rendered on the north west elevation; slate roof, gabled at west end, hipped aqd rounded at east end ; 1 rear lateral stack. The range lies at an angle to Whiteway House and was linked to it until about 20 years ago when some demolition occurred on the north east corner of the the house. It was originally a symmetrical 7-bay range with a rounded end adjacent to the archway leading into the stable yard. A large C20 garage has been made in one end and the north west elevation is no longer symmetrical. Single-storey with loft over. 7-bay front, the left end rounded, centre bay a 2- storey gabled projecting porch with an outer segmental doorway, inner doorway blocked, Diocletian window in the gable with a central sash. 3 16-pane sashes with thick glazing bars to left of centre, 1 similar sash to right of centre, the 2 right hand sashes replaced by a large C20 garage opening. The left end has a plank doorway with a rectangular fanlight and a small loft loading door. Interior Some of the old loosebox partitions have been incorporated into new internal partitions. In spite of the C20 alterations this range is an important foil in the landscape to Whiteway House.
