CHUDLEIGH FORE STREET (west side), Chudleigh SX 8679 6/57 No 60 including iron railings and gates in front -

GV II

House, iron railings and gates. Circa 1810 with later C19/early C20 bay windows. Colourwashed plastered stone ; slate roofs, a hipped roof at the front and 2-span roof to the rear; end stacks with paired chimney pots. Double depth 4 room plan with 2 heated rooms on either side of a central passage with a dogleg stair at the rear of the passage. A service stair leads from the rear left room to service rooms in the basement, one of the service rooms is heated and may have been the kitchen. The basement is at the lower ground level at the rear. A cobbled floor and old door in the basement are probably survivals from an earlier house on the site before the fire of Chudleigh in 1807. 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-bay front with eaves cornice. Central Tuscan porch with a 6-panel front door with panelled reveals and soffit. Ground floor windows 4-pane sashes with added circa 1840s Tudor style hoodmoulds with label stops. 2 first floor canted bay to left and right with dentil friezes are probably a later C19 addition : each bay has a central 4-pane sash and 2 pane outer lights. 12-pane central first floor sash. The rear elevation has a tall sash stair window with a segmental head and interesting glazing bars. The house is slightly set back from Fore Street; iron railings form the boundary of the area in front of the house with a pair of iron vehicular gates to an access road at the right end of the house. The gates have spike finials and semi-circular braces. Interior Contemporary features survive including joinery, plaster cornices an Ashburton marble fireplace and a stick baluster stair with a ramped, wreathed hand rail. A good example of an early C19 house with a very complete interior, typical of the rebuilding of Chudleigh after the fire of 1807.
