CHUDLEIGH OLD EXETER STREET, Chudleigh SX 8679 6/73 Nos 39 and 40 23.8.55 - GV II

House, divided into 2 properties. Early C19. Colourwashed, plastered and blocked out, probably stone; asbestos slate roof; end stacks. Double depth plan, 2 rooms wide, probably originally with a central passage and rear service rooms. 2 storeys. Almost symmetrical 3-bay front with a Lombardic frieze below the eaves. Central 6-panel recessed front door (top panels glazed) with a doorcase with pilasters and a cornice with a Lombardic frieze. C19 front door to no. 39 at extreme left of the range. 3 first floor sash windows: the left hand 12-pane and probably original; the centre and right are 4-pane replacements in original embrasures. Ground floor window left is a 16-pane original sash, ground floor right a 4-pane replacement in original embrasure. An attractive example of the type of early C19 house characteristic of Chudleigh architecture after the great fire of 1807. The Lombardic friezes are a nice variation on the more common dentil frieze.
