NORTH BOVEY SX 78 SW 4/208 Gateway arch approximately 10 - metres east-north-east of Manor House Hotel
GV II
Gateway arch with small lodge either side leading to forecourt of Manor House Hotel (q.v.). Dated 1907 by Detmar Blow for Viscount Hambledon. Snecked dressed granite blocks with Bath stone dressings. Clay tile pyramidal roof to lodges, with ball apex finials at centre. Plan: Central carriageway arch with flanking diagonally set square 1-room plan lodges, each with flanking outer wall. Segmental voussoir stone carriageway arch with studded and panelled doors. Above are 2 octagonal chimneys with central raised plaque in between which has heraldic shield and date of 1907 carved on it. Identical lodge either side with one room on ground floor and one on first floor reached by external stone steps on the opposite side to the archway. Stone 4- centred arched doorway at top and bottom of steps and a 2-light stone mullion window to ground and first floor on each side adjoining the archway. An octagonal stone chimney rises from the flanking wall to each lodge at the top of the external steps.
